Carolyn Brough
Region: Taranaki
Award Category: Taranaki
Year: 2014
Carolyn has undertaken a huge task in weeding a local reserve walkway. She does this once a week rain or shine. Sometimes others help, but often she is there by herself. She also has in the past removed weeds form her own large riverside bush remnant adjacent to her current weedbusting project, so not only has Carolyn removed pest weeds from her own property, she has now moved outwards onto public property, a point at which most of us would have stopped. The hoped for outcome is to have both banks of the Te Henui river pest plant free and replanted in native vegetation. To assist with the replanting Carolyn, along with North Taranaki Branch of Forest & Bird, has on grown seedlings from her own property, as well as organising and assisting at planting days to replant the weeded areas along the Te Henui river. This has meshed with a DoC funded project to clear pest bamboo from the riverbank in 2010/2011.
