Our group looks after two reserves on the Port Hills of Christchurch, 150ha at Onetahi above Governor’s Bay, and 180ha at Omahu Bush and Gibraltar Rock.
Weed control work at both is ongoing as part of our overall management. At Omahu, the major weed problem is gorse. Fortunately whilst we do tackle other weed species, these aren’t a major problem as the bush is well established, and the areas of tussock are grazed. Ohinetahi is more complicated and has the whole range of weeds you’d expect in the area. We tackle these where we can and where they have an obvious impact on natural regeneration.
