In response to the email that the website weed busters is regenerating below is a small blurb about the efforts of the Waikato River Trails in tackling weeds within the 103km of trail.
The Waikato River Trails has an environmental vision to - sustain a variety of River Trails as an enduring attraction which links riparian restoration with the education and enhancement of the Waikato Region as an active recreational destination.
In conjunction with this vision the clearing of thickets of blackberry, tree privet, barberry and Japanese honeysuckle is ongoing by a small maintenance team and from this volunteers are enlisted to assist with the planting of over 12000 NZ native species each year. But the work does not stop there as the control of weeds is critical to ensure the survival and growth of these native plants.
The ongoing riparian improvement of the 103km of trails is to protect and improve the biodiversity of the Waikato river, filtering out sediments from the adjacent pasture land and providing cover and habitat for animal species.
